As people live longer, healthcare systems face this growing challenge, like how to help older adults stay independent while also managing chronic conditions in a safe manner. Connected healthcare devices, usually paired with modern healthcare software development company, have turned into one of the most practical tools for improving senior care, and it really matters more year after year.

From wearable monitors to smart medication dispensers, these technologies help caregivers and clinicians keep a close watch on health, in real time, notice risks sooner and respond faster when something goes off track.

Why Connected Healthcare Devices Matter for Older Adults

Seniors often have multiple health-related problems simultaneously. Routine clinic visits are often challenging owing to mobility problems, transport difficulties, or lack of caregiver assistance.

Connected devices play an important role in filling this gap by automatically collecting and disseminating health data.

Some of the key advantages of connected devices are:

24/7 health monitoring

Early identification of health problems

Improved medication compliance

Reduced unnecessary visits to hospitals

Increased independence at home

Improved communication with caregivers and physicians

They give peace of mind for families and improved information for doctors.

Read: Senior Balance and Fall Prevention: How Structured Arch Contours Improve Proprioception

What Are Connected Healthcare Devices?

Connected healthcare devices are medical or well being tools that gather health details and then send it off, over the internet , Bluetooth, or through cloud based platforms . They are often able to share the data with physicians, nurses, caregivers, family members, and even emergency response services, depending on how it’s set up.

The point is mostly to spot health concerns early ,and help people make quicker care choices.

Which Connected Devices Are Already Improving Senior Care?

Some linked technologies already, kinda help older adults with their everyday care… like in the house, and around daily stuff. They’re basically there to support them in daily routines, just not always in the same way.

Wearable health trackers

Modern wearables keep an eye on your heart rate, blood oxygen activity levels, sleep habits, and even fall incidents a lot. Some upgraded devices can also pick up irregular heart rhythms, then ping users or the healthcare team directly, kinda like, in real time.

Smart medication systems

Medication errors are still a real risk for seniors, you know, the whole thing can get kinda messy. Connected pill dispensers can send those gentle reminders to track when a dose was missed, alert a caregiver in time and then make adherence reports, so it is easier to see what’s going on without guesswork.

Remote patient monitoring devices

Monitoring technology allows for health status monitoring without requiring face-to-face interaction.

Popular forms of remote monitoring technology include:

Blood Pressure monitors

Continuous Glucose monitors

Pulse Oximeters

Weight scales

Health practitioners will be able to monitor the readings remotely in order to take action where necessary.

Smart fall detection systems

Falls are one of the main causes of injury among older adults, and honestly it can be pretty serious. Some connected fall detection systems, use motion sensors, accelerometers and AI based algorithms so they can shoot automatic alerts after a fall happens.

How Artificial Intelligence Will Improve Connected Healthcare

Connected health devices in the future will incorporate AI in their operations.

Currently, devices gather information, but in the future, they will be able to analyze this information and provide alerts, predictions, and advice.

Artificial intelligence can detect:

Indicators of heart disease

Mobility issues

Increased risk of falling

Sleep issues

Indicators of cognitive decline

For instance, subtle differences in movement when walking could indicate increased chances of falling.

The Rise of Smart Homes for Senior Healthcare

Connected health devices now function kind of like pieces inside a larger smart home setup, and honestly they fit in pretty smoothly. Home sensors can track motion, sleep, room temperature, kitchen activity and even entry behavior. When something odd shows up, the whole system may ping caregivers or other family members, right away.

In practice this can help spot possible concerns like a decreased appetite, strange sleep patterns, or sudden inactivity while also keeping the senior’s independence respected, instead of feeling intrusive.

How Telehealth and Connected Devices Work Together

Connected devices make telehealth kind of more useful, because clinicians get objective health data before the virtual appointment. It’s like they can view real time measurements and such, and that helps them decide what to do faster, during the session.

Health Metric

Connected Device

Blood pressure

Smart blood pressure monitor

Blood glucose

Continuous glucose monitor

Heart rhythm

Wearable ECG device

Oxygen saturation

Connected pulse oximeter

Weight trends

Smart scale

This data helps care providers make better decisions and, well, reduces the dependence on the patient’s memory all by itself alone, sort of.

What Challenges Still Need to Be Solved?

Connected healthcare technologies bring big benefits, but a few barriers still remains , in real life it can be a bit messy you know, like adoption gaps and data sharing worries or something similar.

Digital literacy

Quite a few older adults aren’t really at ease with more advanced tech. In general, these devices have to feel kind of simple, with easy interfaces, big text, voice support, and a straightforward, almost effortless setup. Otherwise it can get frustrating , fast, even for people who are usually quick to learn.

Data privacy and security

Healthcare data really needs serious protection, because if it gets exposed it can go very bad. In connected healthcare systems, you should use encryption , plus sturdy and reliable authentication, not just the basic kind. Also include access controls, and make sure it fits the compliance rules or regulations that apply , for the relevant areas.

Device interoperability

Connected devices need to trade data with EHR systems , hospital platforms , care management tools and telehealth solutions too. If the integration isn’t smooth enough then health data can turn into a kind of fragmented trail, not really cohesive, not quite connected.

What Role Will Predictive Healthcare Play?

Healthcare is kinda shifting from reactive treatment into more preventative care, you know. Connected devices are creating constant health signal data and that can back predictive modeling. In the future, systems may help spot heart failure worsening, infection risks, medication trouble, mental wellbeing concerns, and even fall likelihood earlier, instead of later.

This way of doing things can really improve daily quality of life for older adults, and it may also lower the number of avoidable care costs.

How Connected Healthcare Supports Independent Living

A lot of older adults would rather remain at home, for as long as humanly possible, even if it gets a little complicated.

Connected health technologies kind of help with that by strengthening chronic illness monitoring, quickening emergency response, and also keeping family caregivers better in the loop.

Sure, technology can’t really substitute for true human care, yet it can add an extra safety layer that helps seniors live with more confidence, day to day.

What Can We Expect Over the Next Decade?

Several trends are gonna shape this connected care side for seniors, in a sort of gradual way really. You can see it in the way services become more linked and reactive, so seniors get the right support sooner not later, and that feels like the main momentum.

More passive monitoring

Future devices will start collecting data automatically with very little input from the user, like almost unthinkingly. They will do it in the background, day after day, without much fuss or tapping around, and it will feel sort of effortless.

Better predictive analytics

AI systems will likely become more precise at spotting health risks before symptoms get too severe, or you know, before they fully show up. In other words, it’s more about early recognition, not just reacting after everything.

Greater ecosystem integration

Healthcare providers caregivers family members , and even connected devices will work inside more interconnected digital spaces, sort of like a woven network, day by day.

Expanded voice technology

Voice assistants can help older adults with remembering meds, fitting appointments, sharing symptoms in a calm way and asking for emergency help. It kind of works like a gentle guide, reminding them of small tasks, even when their memory feels a bit delayed or tired. Sometimes the voice prompts are just enough, so people do not have to figure everything out alone ,and they can respond quickly.

Conclusion

Connected healthcare devices are slowly becoming kinda a mainstay in senior care. Like wearables, remote monitoring tools, smart medication systems, and home sensors already help older adults handle their health in a more safer way, right there at home.

Over the next decade, AI, predictive analytics, telehealth, and smart home integration will make all of this even more useful, and not just in theory. The main problem will be to keep everything simple, secure, and kind of plug-and-play with the existing healthcare systems.

For older adults, these connected healthcare devices really bring more safety on the daily basis, earlier intervention, better caregiver support, and a better chance to age comfortably at home, without so much trouble or friction.

As we age, maintaining physical independence and mobility becomes a central goal for healthy living. However, one of the most significant threats to senior independence is the risk of falling. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls are the leading cause of injury among adults aged 65 and older. While many fall prevention programs focus on muscle strengthening, vision correction, and lighting adjustments in the home, one critical element is often overlooked: the relationship between the foot and the ground.

Our feet are the body’s primary sensory interface with the physical world. The mechanism that allows us to walk across uneven carpet, stepping stones, or slick grass without looking down is known as proprioception. Proprioception is the nervous system’s ability to perceive joint position, movement, and ground reaction forces.

Maintaining proper foot alignment and enhancing proprioceptive feedback through structured arch contours is a foundational, yet highly effective, strategy for preventing senior falls.

Proprioception and the Aging Foot

Inside the soles of our feet are thousands of specialized sensory receptors called mechanoreceptors. These receptors detect tiny shifts in pressure, tilt, and impact as we stand or walk, sending real-time data to the brain to coordinate balance and prevent tipping.

As we grow older, two physiological changes impair this feedback loop:

Sensory Decline: The density and sensitivity of foot mechanoreceptors naturally decrease, meaning older adults require larger shifts in balance before their brain registers the movement.

Structural Collapse: The longitudinal arch of the foot tends to flatten over time as tendons lose their elasticity. A collapsed or flat arch causes the foot to pronate excessively, rolling inward. This structural misalignment shifts the body’s center of gravity and reduces the stability of the ankle joint, making sudden slips much harder to recover from.

When the arch collapses, the surface area of the foot bed does not interact efficiently with the ground. This muddy sensory signal prevents the brain from making rapid, micro-adjustments to muscle tension in the calves and ankles, increasing fall risk.

Read: What Do We Know About Aging In A Healthy Way?

How Structured Arch Contours Improve Proprioception

Many seniors turn to heavily cushioned athletic shoes in search of comfort. However, standing on ultra-soft memory foam is biomechanically similar to standing on a soft mattress; it destabilizes the foot and dampens sensory feedback, making balance more difficult to maintain.

To optimize proprioception and stability, the foot requires firm, structured support. Upgrading footwear with structured arch contours helps restore balance in several key ways:

Enhancing Contact Area: A contoured arch support fills the physical gap beneath the mid-foot. By ensuring the entire sole of the foot—including the arch—makes contact with the footbed, pressure is redistributed evenly. This increases the total surface area sending sensory signals to the brain.

Stabilizing the Ankle: Rigid or semi-rigid arch contours act as a physical stabilizer. They prevent the heel and ankle from rolling inward (overpronation) or outward. Keeping the heel in a neutral, upright position secures the ankle joint and provides a stable foundation for the lower leg.

Redistributing Ground Reaction Forces: By preventing arch collapse under weight, structured contours help keep the body’s center of gravity centered. For more details on protecting foot structure under dynamic loads, consult VALSOLE’s foot pain relief guide.

Footwear Guidelines for Senior Balance

To proactively reduce fall risks, older adults should evaluate their daily footwear against these safety standards:

Stiff Heel Counter: The back of the shoe surrounding the heel should be rigid and not collapse when pressed inward. A stiff heel counter keeps the heel locked into place, preventing lateral slips.

Minimal Midsole Flex: The shoe should only bend at the toe box (where your toes flex naturally), never in the middle under the arch. A shoe that twists easily in the center lacks the structural integrity to support balance.

Upgrade to Contoured Support: Replace flat, flexible factory insoles with structured inserts that feature a firm arch support. This simple upgrade immediately improves sensory feedback and structural stability.

Taking care of your feet is the first step in taking care of your overall balance. In addition to supportive footwear, you can explore other senior wellness resources on ElderPeopleCare.com to learn about balance training exercises and muscle-strengthening routines.

Incontinence is unfortunately a problem that many seniors face. There is urinary incontinence, an uncontrollable leakage of urine, and fecal incontinence, uncontrollable stool leaks. Dealing with incontinence is embarrassing and stressful. Seniors may withdraw and experience social isolation as a result. Take note that talking to a doctor about incontinence problems is crucial. It’s possible that the conditions that cause it can be treated by them. Fortunately, a wide variety of elderly incontinence products are available to assist seniors in managing their incontinence. When considering which incontinence product is right for them, seniors should consider the fit, comfort, ease of use, and absorbency level needed.

Undergarments And Absorbent Products For Incontinence

Liners Or Pads

Under clothing, numerous elderly incontinence products absorb leaks. Similar to menstrual pads, liners or pads add an extra layer of absorbent protection to regular underwear. They are easy to use, discreet, affordable, and widely available. They come in a variety of sizes and absorbency levels.

Disposable Briefs And Diapers

For bladder and bowel incontinence, briefs—or diapers for elderly women and men—offer more absorbency. They have adjustable tabs and come in all sizes and different styles.

They can be worn during the day or at night and worn under clothing. One of the most widely used products for incontinence is disposable briefs.

Swim Briefs

Swim briefs are adult diapers designed specifically for swimming and designed to fit snugly under swimsuits.

Protective Underwear (Pull-Ups)

The waistband of disposable protective underwear, also known as incontinence pants or pull-ups, is stretchy, making it simple to pull them on. They can be utilized at any time. They are more fitted and offer more odor control than briefs. Because they are thinner and quieter, they are also easier to conceal. However, they are harder to change since pants have to be removed, and they are not as absorbent. When it comes to heavy bowel incontinence, they are not the best choice.

Washable And Reusable Briefs / Underwear

Underwear and briefs that can be washed and reused are also available. These are cheaper and better for the environment, but cleaning them is more work and they may not be as absorbent.

Products For Furniture Protection

Underpads And Bed Pads

Adults can use underpads or bed pads, which are also known as bed sheet protectors. They can be put down under someone to protect furniture, beds, or cars from leakage.

There are a lot of benefits to underpads, such as:

Protecting furniture

Preventing moisture from spreading

Reducing skin irritation

Making clean up easier

Providing a better night’s sleep by preventing waking

Underpads come in a large variety. Options come in a variety of sizes, materials, and absorbency levels, both disposable and reusable. There are also some that have grips, so they don’t move.

Mattress Cover

A mattress cover is like a water-resistant sheet placed under your regular sheets. There are options that can be reused and ones that can be thrown away. Because there is nothing on top of the sheet, mattress covers are more discrete, and some people might find this to be more comfortable.

Hygiene Products For Incontinence

Disposable Gloves

Caregivers who are helping a senior with incontinence or clean up need disposable gloves.

Wipes

Wipes are sold to help seniors clean themselves and keep oneself clean.

Skincare Products

Skincare products like moisturizers, creams, and ointments are also available to prevent skin irritation and incontinence.

Medical Devices To Prevent Incontinence

Clamp Or Bladder Supports For Men

Men can use a penile clamp that puts light pressure on the urethra to help men control leaking. These are reusable but cannot be used at night and must be adjusted frequently. It is important to follow the instructions.

Bladder Supports For Women

Women can use bladder supports inserted like a tampon that put pressure on the urethra to stop leakage. There are both reusable and disposable options.

External Catheters

Both men and women can wear external catheters. Condom catheters, which are worn over the penis and collect urine, are one option for men. They can be worn longer but can be difficult to apply and get the right fit.

Toilet And Bathroom Assistance

Disposable Urinal Bags

There are disposable urinal bags that men and women can use if they cannot reach the bathroom in time.

Bedside Toilet Options

There are also products to assist individuals who suffer from incontinence issues because they are unable to reach the bathroom in a timely manner. Bedpans, urinals, and bedside commodes are examples of these.

Home Care Services For Incontinence Support

Home care services provide trained caregivers to help people with their activities of daily living (ADLs), such as moving around, bathing, grooming, and going to the bathroom.

Seniors can receive as much or as little care they need to remain independent and in their homes. Care can be tailored to each person’s needs.

Caregiver Strategies For Managing Incontinence

Home caregivers can manage incontinence in a variety of ways, including:

Helping elderly people get to the bathroom and reminding them to go there

Assisting them in changing their incontinence products

Cleaning up after any leaks—including assisting with bathing and dressing—to maintain good hygiene and lessen skin irritation

Cleaning up the house and doing laundry after accidents

Encouraging a bathroom schedule

Encouraging seniors to wear clothes that are easy to get on and off to help prevent accidents or help them find adaptive clothing

Providing emotional support by providing companionship and care

Providing safe transportation to meet with friends and socialize, run errands, or go to medical appointments

Monitoring their diet for food triggers

Normalizing incontinence is one of the most important ways home caregivers can help. They are trained to deal with this situation in a patient and kind way to reduce further embarrassment. They can also provide guidance on management, product use, and hygiene.

Hire Pacific Angels Home Care For Incontinence Assistance In California

People in the Monterey, Santa Cruz, and Aptos areas who suffer from incontinence can receive assistance from Pacific Angels Home Care. Our kind caregivers can help with activities of daily living, such as bathing, going to the bathroom, and getting dressed. In addition, we offer secure transportation to and from appointments and the store as well as companionship care to aid in the prevention of social isolation.

Sign up for weekly emails with health aging tips and view a video with NIA’s director on how to live a longer, healthier life.

Healthy aging is influenced by many factors. Genetics, for instance, is one of these that we cannot control. Others are within our reach, such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, seeing a doctor frequently, and taking care of our mental health. Research supported by NIA and others has identified actions you can take to help manage your health, live as independently as possible, and maintain your quality of life as you age. Continue reading to learn more about the study and the actions you can take to age in a healthy way.

Taking Care Of Your Physical Health

While scientists are still actively looking into ways to slow or prevent physical health declines with age, they have already discovered a number of ways to increase one’s chances of staying in good health later in life. Staying active, eating well, getting enough sleep, avoiding alcohol, and taking charge of your health care are all aspects of taking care of your physical health. Supporting healthy aging can be greatly aided by making even a few adjustments in each of these areas.

Get Moving: Physical Activity And Exercise

Whether you love it or hate it, physical activity is a cornerstone of healthy aging. There is scientific evidence to suggest that people who exercise on a regular basis not only live longer but may also live better, gaining more years of life without disability or pain. A study of adults 40 and older found that taking 8,000 steps or more per day, compared to only taking 4,000 steps, was associated with a 51% lower risk of death from all causes.

Activities that keep your body moving, like gardening, walking the dog, and taking the stairs rather than the elevator, can help you get more steps in each day. Exercise is an essential tool for maintaining a healthy weight, despite its numerous other advantages. Obese adults are more likely to suffer from a wide range of illnesses, including type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as death and disability. However, being thinner is not always better for you. Being or becoming too thin as an older adult can weaken your immune system, increase the risk of bone fracture, and in some cases may be a symptom of disease.

Loss of muscle mass can result from both obesity and underweight conditions, which can make a person feel weak and easily tired. Muscle function often deteriorates with age. Older adults may not have the energy to do everyday activities and can lose their independence. However, even as people get older, exercising can help them keep their muscle mass. NIA’s Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging data from 2019 revealed that moderate-to-vigorous physical activity strongly correlates with muscle function across all ages. This suggests that exercise may be able to stop the deterioration of muscle function that comes with age.

Maintaining muscle mass can help older people live longer and improve their quality of life. Muscle mass was found to be a better predictor of longevity in adults over 55 than either weight or body mass index (BMI) in another study.

What Are Your Options?

Although many studies focus on the effects of physical activity on weight and BMI, research has found that even if you’re not losing weight, exercise can still help you live longer and better. There are many ways to get started. Try engaging in brief bouts of physical activity throughout the day or scheduling specific times each week to exercise. Yoga and brisk walking are two examples of inexpensive or free activities that don’t require any special equipment.

When you exercise, you’ll start to feel energized and refreshed rather than exhausted as you get more active. Finding ways to get moving and motivated is essential.

Healthy Eating

Make smart food choices can help you avoid certain health issues as you get older and may even improve how well your brain works. Eating well is not just about your weight, like exercising. It can be difficult to decide what to eat because there are so many different diets available.

The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans provide healthy eating recommendations for each stage of life. Whole grains, healthy fats, lean proteins, and a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables are recommended by the Dietary Guidelines. A lot of research indicates that the Mediterranean-style diet, which includes fresh produce, whole grains, and healthy fats but less dairy and more fish than the typical American diet, may improve health.

A 2021 study analyzing the eating patterns of more than 21,000 participants found that people closely following the Mediterranean-style pattern had a significantly lower risk of sudden cardiac death.

A low-salt diet called Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) has also been shown to deliver significant health benefits. The DASH diet has been shown to lower blood pressure, aid in weight loss, and lower the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. The MIND diet, which combines DASH with a Mediterranean diet, is yet another eating plan that may help people age well. Compared to people who eat other ways, those who strictly adhere to the MIND diet have better overall cognition—the capacity to clearly think, learn, and remember.

What Are Your Options?

Try adopting one or two aspects of the Mediterranean-style eating plan or the MIND diet to begin with. Numerous studies have demonstrated that adopting even a portion of these eating patterns, such as eating more fish or leafy greens, can improve health outcomes.

A diet low in vegetable oil and high in fatty fish was found to reduce migraine headaches in 182 older adults who experienced frequent attacks. Another study that followed almost 1,000 older adults over five years found that consumption of green leafy vegetables was significantly associated with slower cognitive decline.

Even if you haven’t given healthy eating much thought until recently, changing your diet now can still help you feel better as you get older. If you are concerned about what you eat, talk with your doctor about ways you can make better food choices.

For healthy aging, learn more about healthy eating and smart food choices.

Obtaining A Sound Night’s Sleep

Getting enough sleep helps you stay healthy and alert. Even though all adults require seven to nine hours of sleep, older people frequently do not get enough. It can be difficult to fall asleep when you are sick or in pain, and some medications can keep you awake. Not getting enough quality sleep can make a person irritable, depressed, forgetful, and more likely to have falls or other accidents.

What Is The Average Retirement Age?

According to the Life Insurance And Market Research Association (LIMRA), 69% of Americans retire by age 66. Between the ages of 61 and 65, roughly 51% of people retire. By age 75, 89% of Americans have left the labor force.

It surprises me that less than 1% of Americans retire before age 50. With the way the Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) movement has taken off, as well as the rise of freelance work, you’d think the percentage would be higher.

Additionally, I’ve been writing about retirement since 2009 for Financial Samurai. Tens of millions of readers have read this site since. I’m hopeful that during this time, more people have built more wealth and have been able to retire earlier as a result.

Take a look at this graphic below that shows what age do most people retire in America.

How Do Retirees Manage To Live?

According to LIMRA, the typical American household has approximately $253,200. But most of that is owned by the wealthy.

75% of Americans have less than $100,000 saved, which is consistent with the Economic Policy Institute’s 2013 estimate of $17,000 and the median holding of just $17,500.

Working Part-Time To Supplement Retirement Income

The gig economy makes it possible for millions of Americans to work part-time and supplement or replace a full-time income source, despite the low retirement income figures. I’m pretty sure if all went to hell, I could earn at least $50,000 a year driving for Lyft, assembling furniture for Task Rabbit, and being the friendliest greeter at Walmart. However, if I worked more than 50 hours per week, I wouldn’t really be retired.

What I call “Barista FIRE” is working to earn money for your retirement. You are essentially attempting to fill the income gap between your taxable passive investments and your desired lifestyle expenses or a buffer. You might even be able to get subsidized healthcare if you work enough hours.

Healthcare Expenses In Retirement

Our healthcare insurance is the one expense that really weighs heavily on my wife and I in retirement. For a family of four, we pay a staggering $2,380 per month for unsubsidized healthcare insurance.

Reduce Your Housing Costs To Support Retirement

The key to surviving retirement on a low income is owning a home debt free and having sufficient medical coverage. With health and living expenses taken care of, surviving off just $2,000 a month, while challenging, is doable.

I strongly encourage you to try to limit your housing costs to 10% of your annual gross income. If you do, it becomes much simpler to retire early. If you have children who call you back, they might even come to your aid when things get too hard. That said, raising children can be very expensive.

Even High Earners Struggle To Retire

Earning $300,000 per year is not enough to live a comfortable middle-class lifestyle for people who live in a high-priced region of the country and have a few children. Even at age 50, you won’t be able to retire.

You’ll Stay Busy In Retirement

Although I left full-time work at age 34, I’ve never stopped doing some things here and there to keep busy.

For example, I’ve continued to publish three times a week on Financial Samurai since 2009 out of enjoyment and mental stimulation. Consequently, this website generates advertising revenue to supplement my retirement funds.

You should always maintain your active lifestyle after retirement, regardless of your age when the majority of Americans retire. Most will be fine because most will retire to something, not from something.

Your focus simply shifts from something you’re sick of doing to something that’s much more interesting. If you’re lucky enough to love what you do, then by all means work until the very end!

Reducing The Traditional Retirement Age Of 65

According To New Research New research from Bill Bengen, the creator of the 4% Rule, suggests that we may be able to lower the retirement age by 5-10 years, despite the fact that the majority of people typically retire in their 60s.

Bengen now believes a 5% safe withdrawal rate is appropriate for retirees, allowing workers to retire with 20X their annual expenses instead of 25X.

For many people who are overworked and ready for a change, the prospect of retiring comfortably in your mid-50s is exciting. This age is just right—young enough to enjoy an active lifestyle but old enough to have amassed a significant amount of wealth.

Want to learn more? Take a listen to my conversation with Bill Bengen himself, in which we discuss strategies for earlier retirement and safe withdrawal rates.

Manage Your Retirement More Effectively

Use Empower’s free Retirement Planning Calculator to determine your likelihood of retirement success by running thousands of algorithms on real data. To run your various retirement scenarios, simply go to Planning -> Retirement Planner once you have registered.

There’s no better free tool online to help you track your net worth, minimize investment expenses, and manage your wealth.

Diversification In Real Estate

Real estate is my favorite asset class to help you retire and stay retired. It is a real asset that generates income for retirement and is less volatile.

Why Real Estate Helps Retirement

Look to diversify your real estate investments across the country where valuations are lower, net rental yields are higher, and growth rates may be higher. Due to the work-from-home trend, the global pandemic has accelerated demographic shifts toward lower-cost regions of the country.

Real Estate Platforms To Explore

Check out Fundrise and their eREITs, which offer investors a low-volatility way to diversify their real estate exposure. Income is completely passive, and concentration risk is much lower.

If you are bullish on the demographic shift towards lower-cost and less densely populated areas of the country, check out CrowdStreet. CrowdStreet focuses on individual commercial real estate opportunities in 18-hour cities. Both platforms are free to sign up and explore. I’ve personally invested $957,000 in real estate crowdfunding across 18 properties to earn income 100% passively. I’ve personally invested $300,000+ in Fundrise and Fundrise and CrowdStreet are sponsors of Financial Samurai.

1. The Number Of People Retiring Has Never Been Higher

As Baby Boomers near retirement, it’s no secret that the sheer size of this generation will have a compound effect on Social Security and healthcare programs. In 2000, adults aged 65+ represented 12.4% of the population; according to the U.S. By 2030, the Department of Health and Human Services Administration on Aging anticipates that number to rise to 19%. The number of Americans aged 45-64 who will reach the typical retirement age of 65 in the next two decades increased by 31% over the past ten years.

The vast size of this population and the questionable stability of government programs underscore the importance of building a strong and independent financial position as you near your golden years.

2. More Than A Third Of Retirees Rely Almost Entirely On Social Security For Income

As reported by the Social Security Administration, for 23% of married retirees and 46% of unmarried retirees who receive Social Security benefits, it constitutes 90% or more of their income. Where are you likely to be when you reach retirement age? Will you be one of the two-thirds of Americans who has multiple sources of retirement income, or will you heavily rely on support from the government?

3. Your Retiring Peers Are More Likely To Be In Poverty Than The General Population

2011 saw the U.S. The Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM) released by the Census Bureau revealed that the poverty rate for older adults (those 65 and older) is just under 75% higher than that of the general population (15.1% versus 8.7%). The SPM takes into account living costs, non-cash benefits received and non-discretionary expenditures. Out-of-pocket medical expenses are the primary driver for poverty among older Americans, and they often pass that burden along to their families.

4. It’s Possible That You Have A Longer Lifespan Than Your Caregiver Does

Obesity and chronic illness cannot be overcome by Americans for much longer. According to the American Heart Association, the prevalence of obesity has tripled since 1963. Surgeon General Richard Carmona notes, “We may see the first generation that will be less healthy and have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.” Are you prepared to fund your own care, should your children not be able to provide support?

5. Retirement Might Be Bad For Your Health

Retirement offers the promise of relaxation, but in reality, it delivers challenges to both physical and mental health. Studies on retirement performed by the National Bureau of Economic Research revealed that complete retirement leads to a 5-16% increase in difficulties associated with mobility and daily activities, a 5-6% increase in illness conditions, and a 6-9% decline in mental health. These changes take place over an average period of 6 years. Your career required some degree of daily physical activity, and it’s critical to maintain that level of activity, or to add to it, throughout retirement.

6. You May Be Alone In Retirement

The Administration on Aging reports 47% of women aged 75 and older live alone. The story is less lonesome for males; older men are much more likely to be married than older women – 72% versus 42%. As you plan for retirement, take note of how much you’re able to care for yourself.

7. You May Not Be Alone In Retirement

When they discover that they still have significant family responsibilities in retirement, many retirees become disillusioned. According to the Administration on Aging, nearly half a million grandparents who are 65 or older are in charge of their grandchildren who live with them. The Administration on Aging also reports that crowded housing conditions are challenging for retirees who have their adult children or grandchildren living in the home.

8. The Way You Live Will Change

Retirees are frequently prepared for a shift in income, but they may not be ready to adjust their way of life and housing accordingly. According to a report from The Administration on Aging, 40% of older Americans face difficulties with housing because their costs for housing and utilities exceed 30% of household income.

9. It’s Possible That You’ll Outlive Your Retirement Fund

The average retiree can expect to spend nearly two decades in retirement. According to the Administration on Aging, adults over 65 have an average life expectancy of 19.2 more years—20.4 more years for females and 17.8 more years for males. A healthcare study by the Journal of General Internal Medicine noted that end-of-life medical expenses (in the last 5 years of life) range from $38,000 to over $100,000 depending on individual needs and the level of care provided. Is your portfolio designed to cover rising medical costs in the future while also providing a livable income now?

10. Retirement Portfolios Aren’t Keeping Pace With Increasing Life Expectancy

The Administration on Aging also reports that today nearly one in five Americans aged 65 and older are in the labor force; about 7.7 million Americans aged 65 and over are working or actively seeking work (The rates for both men and women have been steadily increasing since the year 2000.) The majority of these Americans are working because they have to; they simply haven’t saved enough for retirement. The Federal Reserve estimates that the average amount saved through a 401(k) plan is approximately $100,000, as pension plans continue to disappear. This amount is far from enough to secure a reasonable retirement and to plan for housing, healthcare and related costs.

Are you thinking about going to Israel? Have you begun planning your trip to Israel? My entire website is about Israel, its main attractions, how to plan your trip, the best places to stay, and Israeli society. However, I wanted to write one post—this post—that summarizes everything you need to know about traveling to Israel. Israel has peace. It is essential to first emphasize that Israel is a safe destination because no one wants to fly to a location where they do not feel safe. I’ve written a long post about why Israel is a safe place to travel, but in summary, I’ll say that if you can fly to New York, you can fly to Tel Aviv or Jerusalem without worrying. Travelers often worry about safety before visiting Israel, but once they get there, they find that Israel is really expensive…

Flying To Israel

The airport that Israelis refer to as Natbag is known as TLV, or Ben Gurion Airport, in English. It is most likely where you will land. The airport is perfectly situated between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, in the middle of Israel. Depending on traffic, it typically takes 40 minutes to reach Tel Aviv’s center, and Jerusalem is a little further away. I would advise you to start your trip to Israel in one of the cities.

Getting To Jerusalem

Jerusalem is reached by bus number 485. It runs 24 hours a day, excluding the period between Friday afternoon and Saturday night. Because taxi drivers won’t tell you about the bus, just follow the signs if you want to take one. If you land between Friday afternoon and Saturday night you can take a shared 10-seater taxi or a private taxi to Jerusalem.

Getting To Tel Aviv

You can take a train to Tel Aviv. There are a few stations in Tel Aviv: HaHagana lies the furthest south and is close to the central bus station but this is not an area you will want to hang around in, especially at night. I would suggest taking the train to the Savidor station in Tel Aviv. It is also convenient for numerous bus routes because it is in the city’s center. But the best way to choose your route on public transportation is perhaps to write to the hotel or hostel in question asking for advice on how to get there.

Israel Is Not Cheap

Go for the best if money is not an issue: stay at the King David or Mamilla Hotels in Jerusalem and The Norman in Tel Aviv, hire a private tour guide every day, and eat at the best Israeli restaurants (they are really good!). But you’ll need to make a budget if money is a factor. The good news is that there is something you can do about it!

Accommodation

The biggest expense is accommodation, and hotels in Israel are expensive (averaging more than $200 a night). But why not stay in a hostel instead? Israel has seen the rise of some excellent hostels in recent years. They all have private rooms with bathrooms, so you can feel like you’re in a hotel but for much less money and with a more open lobby. In a good hostel, a night’s stay costs about $25 for a dorm room and $100 for a private room with a bathroom.

Food On A Budget

Israel’s excellent street food is another way to save money. Order a plate of hummus, shawarma, falafel, or sabich for 25-35 shekels for lunch and you’re set until the evening.

Guided Tours And Knowledge

Power comes from knowledge (and much more). You need to know what you’re looking at in order to enjoy the sights in Israel. In contrast to Egypt’s pyramids, which will amaze you regardless of your prior knowledge, many of Israel’s attractions, including the most well-known ones like the Wailing Wall and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, are not particularly impressive on their own. In order to fully appreciate them, you need to know their history. As a result, hiring a private guide or participating in a tour for a few hours is the best option.

Exploring Tel Aviv

Buy my booklets or any other gbrew, visit Carmel Market, the Tel Aviv Art Museum, the Museum of the Jewish People at Beit Hatfutsot, many Bauhaus buildings, and, of course, the beaches. Although I may not be objective, I think they are great. Although there is a lot to see, Tel Aviv doesn’t have the important sites that Jerusalem does, and many of the buildings look rather neglected. However, the atmosphere, not the significance of the buildings or sites, is what makes Tel Aviv so appealing. You will always feel it on a warm summer night.

Exploring The Judaean Desert

The closest and easiest desert to visit is the Judaean Desert, which is about an hour’s drive from Jerusalem and two hours from Tel Aviv. Here, you can see nature at its most magnificent, just outside of the big cities. The Dead Sea, Masada, and the Ein Gedi nature reserve are the main attractions.

Suggested Itinerary

If you plan to spend five days traveling in Israel, then these places are more than enough. I would suggest spending three nights in Jerusalem, one in Tel Aviv, and one in the Judean Desert. If you want to visit in the winter and enjoy the desert, spend two nights in the Judaean Desert. If you prefer the beaches and nightlife, stay in Tel Aviv for a little longer.

Exploring Other Regions

The Negev Desert, Nazareth, Haifa, the Sea of Galilee, the Golan Heights, Akko, Caesarea, and much more. It really depends on your interests and the activities you enjoy, whether it’s going to religious or archeological sites, long desert hikes, relaxing in nature preserves, or taking in city life.

Seasonal Travel Tips

If you come in winter, try to make the most of the sun in the desert, and if you are a practising Christian, then a tour to Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee is a must.

Transportation

The fact that there is no public transportation from Friday afternoon to Saturday night is the most important thing to keep in mind. Because they are less expensive than flights that land before noon on Friday, people frequently book Friday afternoon flights without realizing that they will have to take a taxi that will cost more than the cheaper flight.

Getting Around Cities

It’s best to get around the big cities on foot, by bus, or in a taxi. In Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, you should drive as little as possible. Believe me! It’s easier to drive in the north (Galilee) or south (Negev Desert), but public transportation is also an option.

The Meals

From street food like falafel and sabich (pita bread with tahini, fried eggplant, boiled egg, and an Israeli salad of tomato, cucumber, and onion) to fine dining restaurants, the food in Israel is absolutely delicious. Additionally, it is healthier than street food in Europe or the United States. It has a lot of olive oil and vegetables, and very little meat.

Kosher Food

Another thing to be aware of is that places are open until late, very late. Walk around Tel Aviv in summer on a normal weeknight at one o’clock in the morning and you will see people sitting down to meals on restaurant terraces. In Israel, most restaurants, food stands on the street, and supermarkets are kosher. They do not serve pork or seafood (as opposed to fish, which you will find), and dairy and meat products are not served together.

The People And The Land

Israel is a corridor. A corridor that connects Europe, Asia, and Africa, where the three Abrahamic religions meet, and through which the great empires of Egypt, Europe, and the East marched. And just like the land and its history, the people are restless, always on the move, intense. Israel is probably the most interesting piece of land in the world.

I would even say it is too interesting!

Come and see for yourself.

Everything You Need To Know About Israel That’s Boring

The shekel, also known as the New Israeli Shekel or the Israeli Shekel, is the currency. The value of one euro or dollar is between 3.5 and 4.5 shekels.

The official languages are Hebrew and Arabic, but many people also speak English well. But don’t let the middling English fool you…

Jafa St, Yafo St, Jaffa Road, Rechov (‘street’ in Hebrew) such are the different names for the same street on different maps and street signs. Both Israelis and government officials are terrible spellers. The Hebrew name will sometimes be anglicized or translated, as in King George Street or HaMelech, which means “king” in Hebrew. Also, the letters s, c, and q might get switched around, so if it looks kind of like what you are looking for, it may well be it; just ask the closest Israeli you can find to let you know.

What Should I Bring Back?

So, you have been to Israel and want to take something back home with you to remind you of Israel, or get a present for those who were not lucky enough to join you. Dates, spices, and tahini (sesame paste) are typically things I recommend. In the event that you discover that you have forgotten someone once you have returned home, there is also a very good cookbook called Jerusalem written by Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi. You can order it online.

The social security system in India is made up of a number of programs and schemes that are distributed across a variety of laws and rules. Only a small percentage of people are eligible for the social security system that is administered by the government. Like in China, India’s social security system includes employer obligations as well as insurance premium payments into government funds. The following kinds of social insurance are covered by India’s social security schemes: There are many different ways that mandatory contributions to social insurance can be used. Some social insurance plans require contributions from all businesses, others from businesses with ten or more employees, and still others from businesses with twenty or more employees.

Fund For Employee Benefits (EPF)

For the EPF, the employer contributes 12% of the basic salary. The employer is obligated to do so under the law. The employee benefits from a PF deduction of 12% of their basic salary. In addition to paying RPFC 12% of base salary, the employer is required to include PF administration in CTC, which costs 0.85% of base salary.

When an employee earns up to INR 15,000 per month, both the employer and the employee are required to make contributions to the EPF scheme. When the employee earns more than this amount, contributions are voluntary.

Benefits from taxes: Under the old tax system, contributions can only be deducted from taxes under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act of 1961. Additionally, the mandatory 20-employee threshold is no longer necessary because a company can voluntarily apply for the PF scheme at any time.

The Registration Process

A company must first secure the The registration process typically lasts between 10 and 15 days before login credentials are issued for streamlined compliance. When the provident fund (PF) is implemented, it is recommended that the business inform employees of any changes and ensure that the salary structure of the employees includes provident fund components, which are a cost to the company (CTC).

The employer’s contribution will be limited to the first INR 15,000 only in the event that an employee’s pay exceeds this amount. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO), which is part of the Ministry of Labor and Employment, has set a limit of 12% for employer and employee contributions for businesses with fewer than 20 employees or that meet specific requirements. Tax would be due on contributions made by private sector and government employees with interest payments exceeding INR 250,000 and INR 500,000, respectively.

Interest earned on contributions exceeding INR 250,000 in the highest 30 percent tax bracket will be taxed at the marginal tax rate.

National Pension System (NPS)

All Indian citizens aged 18 to 60 are eligible to apply for NPS. This includes members of the. The program is open to non-resident Indians (NRIs) as well.

Important eligibility requirements include: NPS provides structured withdrawal options that strike a balance between the need for liquidity and the assurance of retirement income.

For NPS subscribers, the first points of interaction are known as Point of Presence (POP).

NPS account opening is made easier by POPs, which are authorized organizations that include public and private sector banks. As the Central Recordkeeping Agency, the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) is in charge of recordkeeping, administration, and customer service. After retirement, it is the responsibility of annuity service providers (ASPs) to provide monthly pensions.

Employees’ State Insurance (ESI)

In addition, daily wage workers who earn an average wage of up to INR 137 are not required to make a contribution. However, employers are obligated to pay their fair share for these employees.

Under ESI coverage, a sickness benefit equal to 70% of the average daily wage is paid out for 91 days over two benefit periods. The insured worker must contribute for 78 days over a six-month period to be eligible for sickness benefits.

Extended sickness benefits are available, and the eligibility requirements for them are specified.

ESI also provides disability benefits, which can be used for temporary disability benefits as soon as you start working in an insurable job. Depending on the extent of loss of earning capacity as certified by a Medical Board, the permanent disablement benefit is paid at a rate of 90% of the wage in the form of a monthly payment.

The ESI covers benefits for dependents in addition to payments for sickness and disability (DB). The DB paid is at the rate of 90% of the wage in the form of a monthly payment to the dependents of a deceased insured person – in cases where the death has occurred.

Ayushman Bharat Yojana (PMJAY)

The Ayushman Bharat Yojana, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), was launched by the Indian government in 2018 as a transformative health insurance program aimed at providing comprehensive healthcare coverage to the economically vulnerable segments of the population.

The Ayushman Bharat Yojana aims to provide low-income families with extensive health insurance coverage.

The plan provides: The Ayushman Bharat Yojana provides a number of benefits to low-income families to help them pay for medical care.

The program reduces beneficiaries’ out-of-pocket costs by covering up to 5 lakh per family annually, providing a significant financial buffer against high medical costs.

Through a network of affiliated hospitals, beneficiaries have access to high-quality medical care, ensuring prompt and appropriate care.

The implementation of the plan has resulted in the creation of healthcare-related jobs, which has contributed to economic stability and growth.

The plan provides beneficiaries with a comprehensive healthcare experience by covering both pre-hospitalization and post-hospitalization costs.

Social Security Code 2020

The goal of the 2020 Social Security Code was to consolidate and modify social security laws, with a special focus on the unorganized sector.

The Social Security Code of 2020 includes a number of important provisions that aim to simplify and improve the system. Organizations can opt out of certain provisions with the approval of the Central Provident Fund Commissioner if the majority of employees and the employer are in agreement.

The unorganized sector, which employs a large number of people in India, frequently does not have access to formal social security benefits. The Social Security Code for 2020 intends to fill this gap in a number of ways.

Unorganized sector workers are covered by plans for provident funds, insurance, and maternity benefits thanks to the Code’s extension of social security benefits. Additionally, the Code makes it easier for benefits from social security to be transferred, allowing workers to keep their entitlements even when they change jobs or move to a different region.

Employers are encouraged to provide benefits to workers in the unorganized sector as a result of the consolidation of multiple social security laws into a single Code, which makes it easier for them to comply with the law.

Worker Registration For Platforms And Gigs

By requiring gig and platform workers to register on the e-Shram portal, India’s Ministry of Labour and Employment (MOL&E) is working to formalize the gig economy.

Social security benefits and more structured labor protections for these workers are the goals of this initiative.

Strategic perspectives for investors: Doing business in India in 2025 The government has instructed aggregators like Swiggy, Uber, and Amazon to register their employees, which will result in the creation of unique IDs that will assist in determining the size of the gig workforce and establishing targeted policies.

The government is considering mechanisms like per-transaction contributions to guarantee coverage under social security systems in light of the complex nature of gig work, which involves individuals working with multiple platforms.

The e-Shram portal, which went live in 2021, provides Universal Account Numbers (UANs) to nearly 298 million unorganized workers, granting them access to welfare and skilling programs.

In September 2024, aggregators will be required to digitally onboard employees, complete Aadhaar eKYC verification, and integrate APIs to streamline data submission, according to a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

India’s 2020 Code on Social Security, which recognizes gig workers as a distinct labor category, is in line with this push. By 2030, the gig economy is expected to employ 23.5 million people, so the government is working to improve working conditions and close the social security gap.

India’s Unemployment Insurance

The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) introduced unemployment insurance, more commonly referred to as The Rajiv Gandhi Shramik Kalyan Yojana, as a social security measure to assist employees who have involuntarily lost their jobs. The program, which has been given the name Rajiv Gandhi in honor of the former Prime Minister of India, aims to help people without jobs and their families with money problems.

An important update regarding contributions to the National Pension System (NPS) for Central Government employees covered by NPS has been published by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions. The Central Civil Services (Implementation of National Pension System) Rules, 2021, are emphasized in this update, which includes specific guidelines for contributions, suspension, deputation, probation, and other matters. The main points are explained in a way that is easy to read here.

Highlights Of The Government’s Contribution To The National Pension System (NPS) For Central Employees

Defined Contribution Basis For NPS

According to Rule 6 of the Central Civil Services (Implementation of National Pension System) Rules, 2021, the NPS operates on a defined contribution basis.

This is the rule:

Every month, government workers are required to contribute 10% of their pay to NPS. The Government may notify any changes to this percentage. The amount of the contribution will be rounded up to the next higher rupee.

Contribution Throughout The Suspension

Employees may choose to contribute to NPS during suspension. However, the contribution is calculated based on the emoluments entitled during the suspension period if it is later treated as duty or leave eligible for salary.

Additionally

The subscriber’s Individual Pension Account will be credited with any applicable interest that is the difference between the contributions they made during suspension and the amount that is due. The government will set the interest rate, which will be the same as the rate used for deposits into the Public Provident Fund.

Contribution During Deputation Or Absence

During absences for which there is no pay or leave pay, there will be no contributions made.

Employees who are deputized to departments or organizations run by the Central or State Government are required to continue making the same contributions to NPS.

Contribution While On Probation Or Serving Abroad

Employees must continue to contribute to NPS during probation.

The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) and the government must be followed when making contributions during foreign service, including serving as a deputation to international organizations like the UN or the IMF.

Procedure For Contribution Deductions

By the 20th of each month, the Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO) is in charge of deducting contributions from employee salaries and sending the information to the Pay and Accounts Officer or the Cheque Drawing and Disbursing Officer.

Additional Actions Include

By the 25th of each month, the Pay and Accounts Officer or an equivalent will produce a Transaction ID and a Subscription Contribution File.

By the last business day of each month, the contribution must be sent to the Trustee Bank.

Contributions are paid out on the first business day of April for the month of March.

Interest will be credited for any time contributions are not credited due to circumstances beyond the subscriber’s control.

Request For Strict Compliance

All Ministries and Departments have been requested by the Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare to ensure that these regulations are strictly adhered to. For effective implementation, personnel handling NPS matters must be informed of this information.

Conclusion

The purpose of these new guidelines is to make it clear and consistent how Central Government employees’ contributions to the National Pension System are managed. In order to guarantee the proper handling of contributions in a variety of employment situations, including suspension, deputation, probation, and foreign service, these rules must be strictly followed.

Supplements are taken by many people for their overall health and well-being.

Benefits Of Supplements

Benefits of supplements vary based on their type, dosage, and function. Vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, and enzymes are all examples of supplements. Some have ingredients that come directly from food, while others are made synthetically.

There are a lot of supplements that can be bought over-the-counter (OTC), but before taking one, it’s important to know how it works and what the risks might be.

What Are Supplements Used For?

The majority of people use dietary supplements to literally “supplement” their diet.

To make sure they get enough of a particular nutrient each day, some people take supplements. A vegetarian, vegan, paleo, or ketogenic (keto) diet, for instance, may not get enough of certain nutrients, like B vitamins, on a daily basis. They might take supplements to make up for this.

In order to address a known vitamin deficiency, others might take supplements. In the United States, many adults take supplements to increase their daily intake of important nutrients like:

Calcium

Iron

Vitamin D

Potassium

Magnesium

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B2

Vitamin C

Vitamin A

Vitamin B6

Fiber

Supplements are also taken by some to alleviate the symptoms of a health condition that has been diagnosed, to prevent health issues, or to provide specific health benefits.

Common Uses Of Supplements

Melatonin to treat insomnia

Fiber supplements to regulate bowel movements

Calcium or Vitamin D to prevent bone loss

Botanicals: Herbs and botanical compounds, like caffeine and ginger, are frequently used for their alleged health benefits, like lessening inflammation or increasing energy

Probiotics to encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract

Amino acids: Any one of the nine essential amino acids or other non-essential amino acids may be present in these supplements. Amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, may provide a number of advantages, such as recovery and athletic performance

Advantages Of Supplements

Vitamins and minerals have many potential health benefits because they are involved in many of your body’s most important functions.

Examples Of Benefits

Calcium: Increases bone density, prevents fractures in the elderly, especially in women who have gone through menopause, and keeps preeclampsia from happening during pregnancy

Vitamin D: Helps the body absorb calcium better and prevents osteoporosis

Magnesium: Reduces blood pressure and migraine frequency

Folate/Folic Acid: Reduces the risk of certain birth defects when taken during pregnancy, makes antidepressants more effective, and reduces the risk of stroke (when taken alongside B vitamins)

Iron: Protects against iron deficiency anemia and lowers the risk of low birth weight and premature birth during pregnancy

Are Supplements Effective?

There is mixed clinical evidence regarding the efficacy of dietary supplements. Some studies show that certain dietary supplements work as advertised, while others show that they don’t.

For instance, despite its widespread use for this purpose, there is no evidence that the herbal supplement gingko biloba works to prevent cognitive decline.

Despite this, dietary supplements are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but manufacturers are not required to demonstrate the effectiveness and safety of their products before they can be sold.

Evidence Of Effectiveness

Taking a daily iron supplement lowers the risk of anemia in pregnant women

Infants who take folate (folic acid) have a lower risk of developing certain neural tube defects, like spina bifida

Taking fiber supplements reduces cholesterol and relieves persistent constipation

The Dangers Of Supplements

Taking common dietary supplements, like multivitamins, is safe and does not pose significant health risks for the majority of people. But any supplement can cause problems, especially if you take too much or don’t follow the directions.

Possible Side Effects

Stomach ache, indigestion, or vomiting

Dizziness or exhaustion

Chest pain

Trouble breathing

Brisk heart rate

Trouble urinating or dark urine

Bloody or diarrheal stools

Loss of appetite

Accidental weight loss

Allergic reactions may occur if you are allergic to a supplement or its ingredient, with symptoms such as swelling in the throat, tongue, or lips, hives, itching, and rash.

If you experience any of the aforementioned symptoms or reactions, seek immediate medical attention.

Interactions With Drugs

Other supplements and medications may also interact negatively with some supplements.

St. John’s Wort may reduce the effectiveness of antidepressants and contraceptives

Vitamin C and Vitamin E can lessen the side effects of chemotherapy

Vitamin K may make blood thinner Warfarin (Coumadin) less effective

How To Safely Use Supplements

You can take precautions to ensure that supplements are used correctly and safely.

Safety Guidelines

Talk to your doctor before you take any supplements

Inform them of any additional supplements or medications you are taking

Follow the directions on the label of your supplements exactly

Stop taking a supplement as soon as you notice any side effects and seek medical attention

If pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before starting or continuing any supplements

Inform your healthcare provider of any supplements you are taking if you are scheduled for surgery

Other Factors To Consider

Supplements should not be used in place of food to meet your daily requirements for certain essential nutrients, according to the majority of experts.

Additionally, there is insufficient research to support the benefits of supplementing with an excessive amount of certain nutrients, and certain nutrients can be harmful in extremely high doses.

Supplements also can’t take the place of the drugs your doctor has given you to treat a particular health problem.

A Review Of Literature

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can be remedied through the use of dietary supplements, as can daily intake of micronutrients. There is also some evidence certain supplements can provide health benefits and alleviate the symptoms of some medical conditions.

There is limited and ongoing research on the effectiveness of supplements, and different people may react differently to them. If you want to take a dietary supplement, it’s important to talk to a doctor about it and ask about possible side effects and drug interactions.
